Photo Corner: Lucinda Butler Jones Walker and Grandmother

By Ancestry Weekly Discovery 16 September 2009

Contributed by Dr. Edna F. Briggs
The title on this family photo is "Slave Girl," as the child featured was our great-grandmother, Lucinda Butler Jones Walker (born about 1858, died 1934). The older lady was Lucinda's grandmother, name unknown. Lucinda appears in the 1870 and 1880 federal censuses residing in Limestone (Athens) County, Alabama. Oral narratives handed down say that the slaveowner's two daughters argued frequently about who would receive Lucinda as their slave girl when they married and moved out on their own.
